How to Plan the Perfect Honeymoon

For months, sometimes a year or longer, couples put their time, energy, and money into planning the perfect wedding. There’s so much focus on dresses and menus and flowers that most couples are happy to have some help with arrangements for their honeymoon.

I love working with clients to plan just the right trip to start their lives together. Couples usually have a good idea of what their budget is and what type of trip they’d like, but they’re also open to suggestions. After considering their budget, where they would like to go, and what their style of travel is, it’s great working with them to find just the right fit.

Step 1: Stick to the budget. You don’t want to push to your maximum budget on your honeymoon and then find yourself stressed when you’re home and all the bills come in. When choosing where you’ll go, be sure to consider not only the cost of the resort and flights, but also the affordability of excursions and dining. Food is very expensive in Hawaii, for example, so you need to allow for that when planning. And you don’t want to spend so much on your resort that you feel obligated to skip the snorkel tour or luau. With a Mexico all-inclusive, however, you can splurge more on the accommodations, because your food and so many of your activities are included in the price.

Step 2: Find the right destination. Some couples want a beautiful beach, but not all beaches are created equal. Do you need white sand? A swimmable beach? Or are you more inclined to spend your time at the pool? If an active vacation is the goal, are you choosing an area that offers the kind of excursions you want to do? Do you enjoy a vibrant scene and active nightlife? The length of the trip is also important. If a longer international flight is required – along with time changes – then I usually recommend at least 7 nights. These are all issues I discuss with clients in order to narrow down the best spot for their honeymoon.

Step 3: Find the relaxation/activity level that’s right for you. Couples definitely should not over plan their honeymoon. After the hectic pre-wedding pace and then travel to the destination, newlyweds need time to relax and enjoy being together without distractions. But they don’t want to get bored either. Make sure that you have options for activity when you’re ready.

Step 4: Add special touches. I help clients take their trip beyond the expected and add elements that make it magical. Maybe it’s an overwater bungalow, a private dinner on the beach, a cooking class, or a sunset cruise. I scheduled a private photo session for newlyweds near the end of their trip in Florence, Italy. The amazing photos are an incredible memento from their first days as husband and wife.
