Why Should You Visit the French Riviera?
Discovering the Glamour of the French Riviera
When I began planning a fall trip to Europe, I wanted a destination with pleasant weather, rich history, stunning sights, and exceptional hotels. After considering several new locations, I ultimately chose the glamorous French Riviera, or Côte d’Azur. This Mediterranean gem in southeastern France has long been a playground for the rich and famous.
Today, travelers from around the globe flock to this exquisite destination. So, why should you plan a visit?

Climate
The mild climate has always been a draw for vacationers. In the early 1900s, British aristocrats became regular tourists, and the warm sea breezes transformed small fishing villages into luxurious retreats. Artists like Cézanne, Van Gogh, and Matisse also found inspiration here. The term "Côte d’Azur" was first coined in 1887, and today the region boasts over 300 days of sunshine each year, making it an ideal choice for those seeking a warmer European escape.

Medieval Cities
The French Riviera is steeped in fascinating history, having been ruled by powerful leaders from Julius Caesar to Louis XIV and Napoleon. Today, you can explore its medieval cities, each brimming with charm. One standout is Eze, perched high on a hill and offering breathtaking views. As you wander its narrow, winding streets, you'll discover art galleries, quaint cafés, and lush gardens.
In Grasse, we visited the oldest perfumery in the world, where we learned about the intricate art of perfume-making—a true must-see!
I celebrated my birthday in Gourdon, enjoying lunch on the terrace of a family-owned restaurant with stunning views. To my delight, the server surprised me with a house dessert: a warm almond cake. What a sweet birthday treat!

Hollywood’s Golden Age
The French Riviera has long attracted Hollywood's elite, from Greta Garbo to Frank Sinatra, and from Elizabeth Taylor to Rock Hudson. The most iconic moment in its cinematic history is undoubtedly the 1956 wedding of actress Grace Kelly to Prince Rainier of Monaco.
On my trip, I was thrilled to experience Monaco firsthand. The fairy tale romance of Grace and Rainier, despite its challenges, was captivating. I visited the cathedral where they wed, the Prince’s Palace, and the changing of the guards. I learned that Monaco is the second smallest sovereign state in the world after Vatican City and has been governed by the Grimaldi family since 1297!
Port Hercule, Monaco
Monaco is also home to the legendary Monte Carlo, renowned for its casinos. Strolling through the tree-lined boulevards, luxury boutiques, and seeing the opulent cars, I was awestruck by the display of wealth. The casino itself was as magnificent as I had imagined.

Incredible Hotels
The French Riviera boasts an array of lavish hotels and acclaimed restaurants. This is a trip where you’ll want to indulge in your accommodations, because where you stay adds to the allure of your vacation. My favorite was a boutique hotel in Cannes, where the lobby overflowed with fresh flowers each morning, the food exceeded expectations, and the service was impeccable.
People-watching at the hotel was a delight. With French children on holiday, families filled the spaces, and I hardly heard any English until we reached Paris at the end of our journey. I noticed many guests wore hotel bathrobes and slippers to the pool—a charming touch that is quite different from the U.S.

The Azure Coast
Ultimately, the breathtaking views are what draw so many to this region. Côte d’Azur literally means "azure coast," and the crystal-clear blue waters and warmer temperatures attract sun-seekers to its beaches. While the beaches may not rival the white sands of the Caribbean, they possess a unique charm all their own. From above, the dramatic coastline and sparkling waters are simply mesmerizing.
